As you may remember, in January Read by 4th and the Free Library of Philadelphia were awarded funding from the Knight Foundation to advance early childhood literacy in Philadelphia via capacity-building for staff from the Library and the partner networks of Read by 4th. Now that our first-round grantees are under way, we’re excited to be preparing for the second round applications. See below for more details!
Who is eligible for funding –
Much like the Free Library’s Hatching Innovation initiative, funding opportunities will be opened throughout the year for both Free Library staff and Read by 4th campaign partners. Approximately $60,000 funds will be disbursed to multiple applicants over three grant cycles.
To apply for funding –
For those wishing to submit an idea for funding, applicants are invited to take part in a workshop at the Independence Blue Cross Center for Innovation where facilitators will introduce the principles of design thinking and lead brainstorming sessions to help develop ideas into fully realized projects. The workshop will take place from 9am – 11am, but attendees are invited to stay until noon to work on their proposals and collaborate with the facilitators, Free Library, and Read by 4th staff.
Please note only Read by 4th partners or Free Library employees who have attended one of the design thinking workshops (either in January or June) will be invited to submit a proposal. Unable to attend? Not to worry as one more additional workshop will be scheduled this fall.
To serve on the selection committee –
Read by 4th partners and Free Library staff are also invited to help review submitted proposals. We expect to have one meeting in early July. If you serve on the selection committee for rounds 1 or 2, you will still be eligible to submit proposals in round 3. Contact Abby Thaker if you would like to help.
