On Monday, January 15th, as part of the 23rd annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, Read by 4th was proud to host an orientation to train new Reading Captains! This training, taking place at 10:00 am in the Girard College Elementary School library, was facilitated by Read by 4th Executive Director Jenny Bogoni and the Read by 4th team.
Attendees learned about the Read by 4th organization and its mission, what their roles are as Reading Captains, and received a SWAG bag of resources including a t-shirt, reading guides, manual, library card applications and more to help them in their roles as new Reading Captains.
Among the many things discussed was how best to engage children with reading. One new Reading Captain suggested having her children read books on subjects they found interesting. She suggested books on topics such as baseball, video games, science, and more.
By signing up and becoming a Reading Captain, this orientation was a fantastic way for attendees to honor the legacy of Dr. King. These new Reading Captains are helping to pass on information to parents so that they can help their children to become better readers, thereby raising the literacy rate here in the City of Philadelphia.
