EVERY BLOCK NEEDS A

Reading Captain

Ready to make a difference?

Help families raise strong readers one conversation at a time.

Philly neighbors are becoming the go-to early literacy person for their community.

The idea is simple: we know that families turn to their friends when looking for important information and guidance. And in Philly, when it comes to the kids, we have each other’s backs. So, who better to share reading resources than caring neighbors?

What is a Reading Captain?

Reading Captains are volunteers, over the age of 18, who:

  • Understand the importance of reading and are passionate about doing more for families

  • Are already connected to families in their neighborhood and around Philly

  • Are interested in working in their community and collaboratively with partners citywide

  • Are committed to helping neighbors raise strong readers

(And yes, we’re like a block captain, but for all things early literacy.).

Your Role as a Reading Captain.

  • Attend a Reading Captain training to learn about the literacy resources available to families throughout the city.

  • Get connected with your regional Reading Captains group to brainstorm ways to better connect families with resources, problem-solve, and make new friends.

  • Get out there and share what you learned with parents and caregivers in your neighborhood, workplace, grocery store, or even barbershop.

Nothing beats the power of community.
