Book Nooks

Imagine. You’re 4 years old sitting in the barber's chair and nervous about getting your hair cut. As you look in the mirror, the barber slides a book into your hands with a smile and reads along with you during your shapeup. This is happening in Jazz's the Barber's chair at Creative Image Unisex Hair Salon in North Philly, and small businesses citywide.

Inspired by Harlem’s Barbershop Books, Read by 4th created Book Nooks, family read-together zones stocked with books, signage, and comfy seating at everyday locations. Book Nooks transform waiting times at laundromats, nail salons, barbershops, and more, into moments for sharing stories and laughter.

In 2017, Book Nooks were the signature project of Global Citizen’s annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. Hundreds of volunteers assembled bookshelves and collections of stories for businesses and community organizations across the city. To date, 250 book nooks are being used by families citywide.

When you sit in my chair you’re definitely going to get more than a haircut, you’re going to learn how to read.
