Reading Captains

If you haven’t heard already, Philly’s Reading Captains are truly unstoppable.

The idea is simple: we know that families turn to their friends and trusted neighbors when looking for information and resources. So, we started asking Philadelphians to become the go-to early literacy person for their community. And boy, did they answer.

Reading Captains are caring neighbors, who:

  • Understand the importance of reading and are passionate about doing more for families

  • Are already connected to families in their neighborhood and around Philly

  • Work collaboratively with Read by 4th staff and community partners

  • Are committed to protecting every child’s right to read.

Hundreds of Philadelphians from every background and neighborhood raised their hands to help young readers by sharing practical tips and free resources.

Now, we’ve always known the power of community. But the sheer power of Reading Captains never ceases to amaze us. Whether they’re hosting book block parties, helping pack and safely deliver learning materials during the pandemic, or sharing brilliant ideas for and from the community, it’s always an honor to work alongside them.

If you're looking to give back, connect with a network of action-focused change-makers, and make sure the next generation becomes the stronger readers they deserve to be, become a Reading Captain today!
